On December 5th, 2017, the Broken Arrow City Council approved the Citizens Recycling Committee's recommendation of running two concurrent curbside recycling pilot programs encompassing 500 customers each. The first pilot continued the collection of garbage in trash bags, but included a plastic cart for recyclables. The second pilot included a cart for both trash and recycling services.
Feedback from the pilot neighborhoods was generally very positive and provided a strong basis for Broken Arrow to launch curbside recycling. The Broken Arrow Municipal Authority approved an operations plan including the introduction of recycling, carts for trash and recycling, and truck automation on March 3, 2020.
This video explains the timeline for cart rollout. Written details are available below:
Note: We anticipate a successful fall 2020 launch of curbside cart collection. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected manufacturing timelines. If any portion of the program is pushed back, there will be updates posted on this website and through out social media.
City staff will spend June distributing information and working with residents to prepare for cart selection. Our cart naming coloring contest is a great way to get your family talking about recycling! To download the coloring sheet, click here.
In early July, sanitation customers will receive a mailer created by the City and our cart vendor allowing each house to select their trash cart size and opt in / opt out of Curbside Recycling. Questions can be directed to the customer service phone number listed on the mailer, or to our City Recycling Team at 918-259-2400 ext. 7364.
August will be spent processing cart requests, completing manufacturing, and finalizing new routes for sanitation and recycling trucks.
City staff are available during this time to work with customers on any issues or concerns.
Carts will arrive in the latter weeks of September and be professionally delivered to each customer's home. Carts will include information about the new program and provide guidance on what can be recycled.
In October, cart service will be fully implemented, and staff will continue to work to maintain the high standard of service the Broken Arrow Sanitation Division has always delivered.
