Florence Street widening project begins April 27
Roadway expected to be closed for 4 months
A half-mile section of Florence Street between Olive Avenue and 138th E. Ave. will be closed for a street widening project beginning Monday.
The project will widen half of the existing section from two lanes to three lanes and half of the section will be increased to five lanes.
Sidewalks, an enclosed storm drainage system, concrete curbs, and gutters are also included in this project. Additional improvements include the extension of an existing reinforced concrete box culvert structure, waterline relocation, and a pedestrian hybrid beacon installation.
The project was awarded to Becco Contractors, Inc., the lowest responsible bidder, with a total bid of $3,877,000.
The road closure is necessary to allow the contractor to safely complete underground utilities, including the stormwater structures and waterline relocations associated with the public improvements project. The road closure was presented to the City Council at its April 21 meeting.
A detour route will be implemented to shift traffic accordingly, and residents will be allowed local access through the area during construction. The road closures will be implemented April 27- August 20 or may reopen sooner depending upon the completion of the work within this section.
Traffic signs will be placed in the roadway before closure, alerting the traveling public of the pending detour. Motorists should use caution in the area in during construction for the safety of our contractors and residents.
