Wipes clog pipes

Flushable wipes aren't flushable

Post Date:04/02/2020 1:47 p.m.

Broken Arrow residents, like others across the country, aren’t just battling COVID-19, but are often struggling to find necessities—like toilet paper.

We understand the challenge, but please resist the temptation to flush ANYTHING except toilet paper.

Lysol wipes, baby wipes, and bathroom wipes are not to be flushed down the toilet even if they say flushable on the package. Paper towels and feminine products also are never flushable.

When these products are flushed, it causes blockages in home sewer lines and the city sewer mains.

“When a blockage occurs in a sewer line, water takes the path of least resistance and can come out of a sewer manhole in a resident’s yard or the street,” said Water Resources Coordinator for the Broken Arrow Utilities Department Lauren Kimbrough. “Raw sewage can also backup into home toilets, bathtubs, and sinks.”

If you are using these products in the restroom, please throw them in the trash. When you throw them in the garbage, please make sure they are in a closed bag before placing them in the trash receptacle that goes to the curb for pickup.

By doing this, you will not only protect our sanitation employees, but will also keep refuse from blowing out and landing in our streets, creeks, and streams.
