Susan Anderson is hearing the pitter-patter of little doggy feet once again after a trip to the Broken Arrow Animal Shelter led to Molly joining the family.
August is Summer Hero Month at the Broken Arrow Animal Shelter, 4121 E. Omaha St., where “every hero needs a home.” Pet adoptions are only $25 through Aug. 31.
Pepper, their family dog for more than 15 years, passed away, and after a period of mourning, the Andersons knew it was time for a new friend.
“We decided we were ready,” Susan said.
Her husband Dave stopped by the Broken Arrow Animal Shelter one day and asked if they had any small female dogs.
“We've always gotten our dogs from animal rescues,” Susan said. “We did have a dog before from the Broken Arrow Shelter, and she was great. We’ve had such good luck with them.”
When the animal control officer brought out the small, female terrier mix with gray curly hair, it was love at first sight.
“He called me and said, ‘You need to come right over!’” she said. “They brought her into the room, and she jumped right on the seat. That was it. We brought her home that day.”
Now, Susan says Molly, named after Dave’s childhood dog, has added a lot to their lives, and they’re grateful to have her.
“It’s been a great experience. There’s just a lot of love,” Susan said. “My husband loves her, and she’s added a lot to the family. We have children and grandchildren, and they all like Molly. She’s very good with the kids.”
Susan says the shelter staff were very nice and gave them all the information they had about Molly. She is house-trained and already knows some basic commands, and Susan is looking forward to getting her additional training.
Though it’s only been a month, Molly is comfortable at home and acts as if she owns the place.
“I believe that when you adopt a shelter pet, there’s more love,” Susan said. “They know that you have rescued them, so I believe there’s more unconditional love. And I think they know that you saved them, and they save us too, because they give us love as well.”
