This month’s Broken Arrow in Motion features updates on a new parking lot that’s open in the Rose District, the elevated water storage tank project, street projects, and more!
Just in time for Christmas in Broken Arrow, a new parking lot is now open at 202 W. Commercial Street, near Ash and Commercial in the Rose District. This new parking lot, just like all the parking spaces in the Rose District, is free and open to the public. Although PSO still needs to install the meter and provide power to the parking lot, and the contractor, Magnum Construction, has a few punch list items to complete, it is now open to the public. So come to the Rose District and experience the magic of Christmas in Broken Arrow. For more information and a schedule of events, go to Visit Broken Arrow.
In the Rose District, a significant residential street rehabilitation project, College Addition, Phase 1, is underway. This project will cover roughly five blocks north of the Rose District, between Main and Fifth Streets, and Detroit and Greeley. The project is one of 26 residential street rehabilitation projects the city is advancing in Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026. The street milling is complete, and the storm drainpipe is also now installed from Main Street, down Freeport Street to the alley. Now, the storm structure at Main Street and Freeport Street is under construction. The full-depth road tear-out is complete, and the new asphalt is to be installed in the coming weeks, depending on weather conditions. Additional concrete work at the east alley entrance on Third Street, between College and Elgin Streets, will be completed before asphalt operations begin. Concrete drainage and approach work are also included in this project.
Next, we have one more project to discuss downtown: the Oakcrest subdivision waterline. Installation of the new waterline is 90 percent complete, while the sewer line is 65 percent complete. New driveways are under construction, and cleanup is underway throughout the project.
Next, let’s go to the new elevated water storage tank that is under construction on the corner of New Orleans and Lynn Lane. The contractor well-tested the 2.5-million-gallon tank on Nov. 6. Later this month, they will begin coating the inside of the tank to make it waterproof. The plan is to have the tank raised into position after the first of the year.
Now, here’s an update on Phase 2 of the County Line Trunk Sewer project. With this project, the City of Broken Arrow is investing $5.8 million in its Utilities infrastructure for Phase Two of the County Line Trunk Sewer project, which is currently underway along 23rd Street, also known as County Line Road.
At New Orleans Street and County Line Road, the contractor, Belt Construction, Inc., is installing the fiberglass sewer pipe between the manholes and is joint-testing and boring through the rock under the roadway. This project is expected to finish in the first quarter of 2026.
Staying on New Orleans Street, let’s go east and discuss the Events Park Infrastructure project. These infrastructure improvements are part of the city’s partnership with Venu for the Sunset Amphitheater project. We can now report that all three parking lots are now 100 percent complete. Next, PSO will begin relocating its poles and powerlines. Once moved, Phase 2 of the New Orleans Street widening project can begin. This continuation of the street widening on New Orleans will add a 900-foot lane along 101st Street on the south side of the roadway, just past the intersection of 209th.
Now, let’s go west to another street widening project on Houston Street, from Garnett Road to Olive Avenue. The curb and gutter on the north side of Houston Street were installed last week. Next, the contractor will begin replacing the entrances into the subdivision and the driveways affected by the project. A new signal pole will be installed on the east side of Olive Avenue this week.
And now to Phase 1 of the Aspen Avenue Widening Project, between Tucson and Jasper streets. The entire project will be completed in three phases. The first phase will be the intersection at Jasper and Aspen. The intersection at Tucson and Aspen, then widening the mile between the two intersections from two to five lanes. The contractor will finish the intersections first because they are what cause most of the traffic delays. The contractor is currently working on the east side of Aspen at Shreveport, forming and placing concrete forms and installing the dedicated right-turn lane. The sidewalk on the east side of Aspen Avenue is 95 percent complete. And the contractor has milled the roadway at Shreveport and replaced the asphalt. It’s important to note that the work will be on pause for the next two weeks to accommodate traffic due to a large soccer tournament being held at Indian Springs Sports Complex.
At Arrow Forge, the roundabout concrete has been poured, and crews are working at the Joshua Avenue intersection. The crews are also setting the pedestrian signal poles in the district.
Now to the northern part of Broken Arrow. First, the new turf installation is complete at the Nienhuis Football Fields. The contractor has a few small punch list items to complete this week. Still, otherwise, this field is ready for use and is an excellent asset to our sports facilities.
And finally, let’s discuss the Carriage Crossing Residential Roadway Rehabilitation project. This project is northeast of Albany Street and Lynn Lane. The city is rehabbing more than 6,000 square yards of concrete roadway, 13,400 square yards of asphalt roadway, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, ADA ramps, waterline relocation, and storm sewer improvements. The project is now 40 percent complete, and the contractor is currently working on the sidewalk and concrete panels on Dover and 10th streets.
