Property Room
The responsibility of the police property and evidence room is for safeguarding evidence from criminal cases; storing personal property from and for someone who was victimized and incapacitated as the result of either a criminal act, or a non-criminal incident.
Another function of the property room is the storage of non-evidentiary items such as bicycles; sporting equipment ; cash found); jewelry ,etc.
The prompt removal or purging of property prevents a property management system overload and reduces storage space. The purging
process is accomplished by preparing and presenting various exhibits to district court petitioning the court to authorize the lawful disposal of property by the following means:
- Placing unclaimed items of value on-line for sale with a portion of the proceeds deposited in the city’s general fund.
- Authorizing the destruction of firearms.
- Unclaimed cash to default to the city.
- Donating bicycles to non-profit organizations.
- Donating non-bicycles to non-profits or educational institutions.
- Items for departmental use such as firearms; electronic devices, etc.
- Items to default to the finder.
A police evidence room is vital to the successful prosecution of criminal
cases ,and the timely return of property to the lawful owner(s).
